One good thing that is sure to arise from Twitter’s rolling out of commercial accounts, is the ability of corporations and celebrities to verify themselves. This should cut down on spammers taking advantage of brand equity, or playing off of high profile individuals. Certainly adding a step of verification to the process will add validity to the system and legitimize the platform as a social microphone.
Another big move that will come with the commercial accounts will be an offering of proprietary analytics. For the time being most entities have been using third party API’s to mine the data concerning their productivity on the network. If Twitter can take its analytics above and beyond third party efforts, they can charge corporations for commercial accounts. This would , of course, be some much needed revenue. The implications here are plentiful. Once you have a high end statistical network in place, it would be easy to begin serving ads and managing advertising campaigns. The implications for a political campaign would certainly translate well into revenue for the young company.
It should be interesting to see what will come of the commercial accounts. Not only in terms of market reception, but also in providing twitter with a platform from which to grow its revenue.
