Ripen Green Tomatoes

Tomatoes are a gardeners favorite vegetable to grow. When the hot summer season ends there are usually plenty of green tomatoes left on the vines. No sense letting green tomatoes go to waste when the cool fall turns to frosty winter weather. Just before the first winter frost, pick your green tomatoes. You can easily ripen green tomatoes indoors using a box, newspaper and a banana. You’ll enjoy fresh tasting, red tomatoes all winter and spring.  Learn the secret to Ripening Green Tomatoes Before the Winter Frost

  • I wish I could find green tomatoes! I love fried green tomatoes, but find it diifcult to find them in the grocery stores, and unfortunately don’t have my own garden. Any suggestions?

  • Grocery stores usually don’t carry them–you’re right. However, if you might check the farmer’s market, fruit stands, local roadside stands at small farms (where you can ask the farmer directly for green tomatoes), and even local gardeners/neighbors who grow toms.

The best time to try and get lots of them if you are making salsa or something else with green tomatoes is at the end of the growing season. My tomato plants are loaded with green tomatoes at the end of summer/early fall–just before the first hard frost. At that point, it is pick them or let the frost kill them, so us gardeners hate to see waste and will make a deal or give away green tomatoes.

I live in WA State…perhaps hot, sunny states don’t have as many green ones left on the vines. Just a thought.
