Nearly all of us will suffer from back pain, usually caused by a strain or sprain but the good news is that it rarely requires surgery. Simple remedies including over the counter pain medications, massage and heat therapy and rest is usually all that is needed. For longer term back pain your doctor may prescribe stronger medications and surgery as a last resort in the few cases where these simpler methods do not work. A physiotherapist or massager can give relief and may use a variety of techniques including TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) and can give you techniques to help prevent recurrence.
