It is quite surprising the number of people who are living in a secret relationship.  There could be different reasons they are keeping their relationship secret.  Some people keep their relationship under wraps because their parents don’t approve, others because they are not sure if they want to pursue the relationship seriously or not.  Whatever the reason, a secret relationship can be fun for the short term but in the long run there are going to be serious issues.

For one thing, if you are dating someone that your friends or parents do not approve of there is probably a good reason why.  Especially for teenagers who like to rebel against their parents and date the “baddest” kid in the school, if they are going to be a negative influence then you probably should not be dating them.  You have to realize just how many problems you are probably going to face as a result of the secrecy of your relationship.  They are probably just trying to take care of you and especially if this person is having a negative effect on you, it may be time to end the secret relationship.

A lot of the time when this happens the person will ignore the people around them and soon down the line find themselves in a case of domestic abuse or other problems.  It really all depends on whether or not you are planning to stay with this person for the long-term.  You cannot go together to public events or family functions.  This can be extremely difficult and put a huge strain on your relationship.

After all, your friends and family may not approve because they may not know the person well enough.  Decide if it will be the best idea to continue on with this relationship or break things off.  Any relationship where your partner is not able to communicate or get along with your loved ones is going to be strained.  You really never know what will happen until you try.

You are going to be a nervous wreck if you pursue a secret relationship for the long term.  You are never going to be able to hang out with the people you love most in your life.  You should be proud of the person you are with and the relationship you are in, and never feel ashamed as though you have to cover it up.  No secret relationship can truly be successful because there will just be too many constraints and stressors.
