I have a confession to make – ok I admit it – I’m a 68 years old male with high cholesterol! There I’ve said it. I am in the ranks of thousands who suffer from the same complaint but so what! That doesn’t make me a bad person does it? So , go tell the world – see if I care!
My doctor has had me on a tablet regime for some years now and frankly I’m fed up with it. I often wonder if their warnings of impending doom are a bit overdone – I mean other than cholesterol I am fairly healthy if a little bit unfit.
So, just before Xmas, I came to the conclusion that there had to be a better way to sort this out. So I decided to walk my way back to health. Yes, you got it right, I said walk! So the first thing I did was stop taking statins. I had heard horrible things about them in the Press anyway and hated the colour of the damn tablets.
The second thing was to put together a walking schedule tailored to suit my circumstances. So I sat down and put a plan together which I typed up and stuck to my fridge door with a magnet. Can’t miss it whenever I go to the fridge, so it acts as a constant motivational “prop” for me.
My idea was to drive down to my local beach at 8am each day, park the car and go walkies along the sand. Timing was important because Car Parking charges don’t start until 9.30am each day. Score one for the good guys. I hate bureaucrats!
That meant I had roughly just over an hour to walk the Beach before my time ran out. Came Jan 1 (yes New Years Day) and off I set in the freezing cold wrapped up like a Polar Bear with a pair of newly bought trainers on my self conscious feet. That first try did not take me an hour. After about 15 minutes I was back at the car wheezing like a fish out of water and my legs like jelly.
I persevered and now some 4 months later I am walking for 80 minutes every day, have dropped nearly 10lbs and feel like a new man. Along the journey I bought an Omron Pedometer as I was sick of counting my 8000 steps. Yep – now up to 8000 steps! I bought it to keep an eye on my step count and heart rate but was pleasantly surprised at all the information it produces.
It comes complete with softwear which can be uploaded to your P.C.by cable and provides ongoing performance and health monitoring on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis in a clearly readable coloured chart style which displays the data in graphical and numerical form.
When setting up your unit for the first time, make a note of your registration number, and then enter your basic objectives such as daily steps, aerobic steps, distances etc. Performance targets can be adjusted via the menu options screen and the pedometer displays 7 days worth of step data but I recommend uploading your data daily – it takes no time at all and gives excellent feedback on your progress
The unit itself is light and very compact and fits nicely into your pocket. For me this has to be one of the best walking and health monitoring products out there and I have no hesitation in recommending it to all aspiring 68 year olds like me!
