We have all seen it on the news, a story comes on aboutas not heard of Green Peace or watched Whale Wars on cable television. I personal some endangered animal or that there is some environmental group protesting somewhere. I mean who hly do not agree with a lot of the people or their tactics on this television show. I do however agree that our wild animals need to be protected and preserved for future generations. There are a lot of little known creatures out there that have declining numbers or are facing the possibility of extinction altogether.
Here is one of those rare animals that is facing extinction. His name is Lonesome George. Lonesome George has the distinction of being considered the worlds rarest animal. What makes Lonesome George so rare is the fact that he is a Pint Island Tortoise. You see the giant Pint Island Tortoise was thought to be extinct until a snail biologist named Joseph Vagvolgyi stumbled across Lonesome George while out doing field research on Pint Island in the Galapagos.
This wonderful discovery happened on December 1, 1971 and since that time Lonesome George has been moved to the Charles Darwin Research Station in an effort to protect this one of a kind tortoise. Currently they are offering a $10,000 reward for anyone who can find a female pure bred Pint Island Tortoise to breed George with.
