Graves Disease - Learn to live with Hyperthyroidism

A major cause of hyperthyroidism is the condition Graves’ disease, which is an autoimmune disease. It wrongly identifies a persons thyroid gland as an intruder, this triggers antibodies being sent to destroy the gland which in turn results in more thyroxine being released by the thyroid gland. In contrast to an underactive thyroid, hyperthyroidism results in an increase of the sufferers metabolic rate which can also then lead to many other health problems like increased anxiety or irregular heart beat. Statistics show that middle aged women are most at risk of contracting the disease but it can also be found in young children, possibly genetic, and also in more elderly women.

Thyroid Surgery
Graves Disease – Surgery to Reduce Thyroxine Production

Some of the more common symptoms experienced by sufferers of hyperthyroidism are an increased appetite, yet still losing weight, restlessness but constantly fatigued, swelling around the eye sockets coupled with double or blurred vision, heightened sensitivity to heat, nervousness, a reduced libido and irregular or changed heart rhythm. Anyone hoping for a hypothyroid cure will be disappointed but the disease is not a threat to life and, with the correct overactive thyroid treatments such as radioactive iodine, anti-thyroid drugs and in more severe cases, surgery for partial removal of the thyroid gland, it can be easily managed.

Most but not all, sufferers do respond well to the anti thyroid treatment, which is in most cases the first treatment course, but alternatives are available if the patient has experienced a problem with swallowing. If this is the case surgery may be the best course of action and is used to reduce the size of the enlarged thyroid gland. This has the duel benefit of eradicating the problem with swallowing and reducing the output of thyroxine due to a smaller thyroid gland. The second benefit can also be achieved through a radioactive iodine pill which, when swallowed, removes some or even all of the thyroid gland. When all the gland is removed, some see this as a cure for hyperthyroidism but it will leave the patient looking at a life times treatment for an underactive thyroid. The upside though is, this method is painless and has minimal side effects attached to it.

Improper, delayed or no treatment can bring about a totally different set of thyroid disorders to overcome and even though there is no hyperthyroid cure the correct overactive thyroid treatments can lead to the patient returning to a normal, healthier, happier life relatively free from the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
