Work the cleanser into a good lather and using only the fingertips wash your face using a circular motion. Rinsing is important. Warm water should be splashed over the face until all traces of the cleanser have been removed. You should then pat your skin dry without rubbing it using a clean towel. Towels should never be used more than once without be laundered. The skin should be allowed to air dry for at least 15 minutes before any acne medication or moisturizers are applied. The fact of the matter is that  there is not just one specific cause of acne. There are many things that can trigger an acne outbreak. Hormones, stress, medications, cosmetics, and diet can all contribute to an outbreak. It is foolish to believe that all acne is caused by the same thing or that separate acne outbreaks in the same individual are caused by the same thing. That just isnt necessarily true. Strange as it may sound, over zealous facial cleansing can actually contribute to an outbreak of acne. Scrubbing the face really hard with a washcloth can stimulate the sebaceous glands into producing more sebum. You really do not want to do that as it does contribute to acne.

Twice-a-day gentle face washing is sufficient and preferable to hard face scrubbing. You cant scrub acne away. Scrubbing exacerbates the problem. Some medications can cause an acne outbreak. Some medication used to treat asthma and thyroid problems as well as medications used to treat convulsions, depression and to prevent the body from rejecting a transplant can all cause the sebaceous glands to produce too much sebum and cause acne. When you see a dermatologist, you should always provide him with a complete list of any edications that you may be taking. If you are a female, try changing brands of cosmetics before you begin treating the acne.

If you are under a great deal of stress, try yoga or meditation to try to relieve the stress and see if your acne problem goes away with just simple stress reduction. There is a definite link between the mind and the body, stress and acne. Try adding zinc, Vitamins A, C and B6, chromium and selenium either through the food you eat or by adding supplements.  Food doesnt cause acne but the lack of nutrients can and does cause acne.
