I bought this scanner for the purpose of scanning pages out of law books at the library. After about two minutes’ practice, it was a cinch. In fifteen minutes I was able to scan 30 pages’ research, and later downloaded it all to my laptop as .PDF files. The resolution is great, and the scan quality was good enough to use in powerpoint presentations after cropping and magnifying with Microsoft Picture Manager. You can’t get scans out of books with a page-fed portable, and a desktop model is too big to carry. Light years better than waiting for the library photocopier.

I have a selection of scanners for different purposes and I got this one first because it is the only portable scanner insofar that you don’t have to carry a laptop with you in order to scan what you want, as with for example iris portable scanners, and I got it because I wanted to scan selections from the books. I prefer other scanner for scanning loose-leaf material like receipts – like Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner for PC, and frankly speaking I get better results when it comes to scanning entire pages from books using Plustek Opticbook 3600 A4 Book Edge Scanner Pdf Conversion (so far no problems with that one), still I find using VuPoint magic wand more convenient because I can carry it with me.

I consider it a good scanner if you want to scan material to use as a reference. I did scan both images and text and didn’t have any problems – except that when I scan a page from a book, scanning text that is close to the spine of the book can get challenging and sometimes that part of the scanned text or image can turn out a bit wavy. I know that some people have been using this scanner for scanning documents with no problems, but I’d find that too frustrating, and would use either the flatbed scanner or something like Fuijtsu ScanSnap.

I am happy that I can carry this scanner with me and find it quite handy in that respect.

Also, as you may be already aware – the scanner doesn’t come with an SD card, so you do need to purchase a micro SD card separately. Transferring the scanned material from the scanner to the computer is a piece of cake. You can either plug in the scanner to the computer through a USB port, or take out micro SD card and put it in your computer and then drag and drop scanned images from the scanner or card to your computer.
