A Christmas wreath is a very popular tradition that you will find in the homes of almost everyone during the holiday season. When you visit the homes of family and friends, it is not uncommon to see a beautiful wreath hanging on their front door as a welcoming decoration. You may also find these amazing decorations above stairs or fireplaces, hanging on walls, or even festively used as the centerpiece of the dining room table. Wherever you may find the Christmas wreath, they are all unique and gorgeous.
The Christmas wreath has been used for many years throughout the season. “Wreath” is similar to the English meaning for “wrist”, due to the circular shape. Also, “wrethe” is a Middle English word meaning a twisted band of flowers or leaves. The wreath has great symbolic meaning for the Christmas season. In many countries, it symbolizes eternal life due to not having a beginning or end. It is possible that the actual hanging of a wreath on your door came from Ancient Rome. In ancient Roman days, wreaths were used as a symbol of one’s victory. This trend caught on, and is still used today; however we do not place them on our heads as the Roman Empire commonly did. Furthermore, a Christmas wreath is the most popular Christmas decoration besides the actual Christmas tree.
There are many different types of Christmas wreaths you can either make, or buy. Generally, there are two categories that a wreath can fall under. First, you have the Advent wreath which is used to symbolize everlasting life, and light, as well as the Christian belief in Jesus Christ. This wreath is placed as a decoration on a table top with candles for the light. Commonly, you will see four violet colored candles inside the wreath, and one white or silver candle in the center. The Advent Wreath is a tradition that dates back to the 16th century. When in the home, you will light one of the purple candles before dinner. Then on the second week two candles will be lit and so on. On December 24th, you will light the final candle to represent Jesus Christ’s birth.
Next, you have the decorative wreath. These are the most common type that you see in homes today. They are made out of many different materials, including pine cones, berries, holly and evergreen leaves. The materials that can be used are endless. Use your imagination for a fun and creative wreath. These are basically used as decorative purposes in the home, which are perfect for that finishing touch to your holiday decorations. You can either make the wreath yourself, or you can buy them at any store during the season. Internet purchase of wreaths has become very popular as well. Commonly, these decorative wreaths are used as a symbol of life being able to make it through the tough winter season. The evergreen trees always remain green and live through the cold of the winter.
If you currently do not use a wreath, maybe this year you should consider a new tradition. A symbol of peace and everlasting life can be the perfect touch to any home during the Christmas season.
