Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman stated that Wednesday when word of the dam breaking reached authorities, the public safety was their first and ultimate concern.

Even this experience had been rehearsed earlier this year. The authorities said that the ensuing emergency drill was proved successful.

Tempe Fire Department spokesman Mike Reichling clarified what happened when 911 calls began to come in at about 9:46 p.m. they have got information that the dam collapsed.

Reichling said that Tempe Fire units were heading to Town Lake in about 3 minutes of the incident. The battalion chief was in charge to put the appropriate emergency plan into set.

Reichling said that plans already prepared on the State County and municipal level for likely disasters. Therefore, they will be ready to fix hazardous materials spills, tornadoes, earthquakes, and, in Tempe, for a dam failure.

That dam failure seems like thousand gallons of water would begin to rush down the bed of the Salt River.

The county office then activated the plan for dealing a dam collapse. The chief firstly made sure nobody was in the river bed and in risk from the rushing water.

In short time after 10 p.m, a Phoenix Fire helicopter was being readied to operate over the riverbed and use Forward Looking Infrared equipment to spot people needed help.

Also, more than 60 Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, Tempe, Scottsdale, Phoenix and Goodyear officers and fire fighters reacted.

They were walking the riverbanks and parts of the river bottom looking for people who might be sleeping there. They concerned particularly homeless people who sometimes seek shelter in the river bed.

Reichling noted that the water flowing from the dam, about 15,000 cfs. It was about the same that had been released during much of the spring because of heavy runoff.

The possibility of people being in the water’s path was low. He said that as of Wednesday there were no facts of anyone being hurt due the water.
