5 Years And Still Kicking

These things are practically bulletproof if you know how to use them.

I have been putting the Little Giant 5-APCP on my cover to drain it and removing it as well and I’ve had this pump for 5 years.

This isn’t a if I may borrow a slogan from a corny infomercial “set it and forget it” product. The diaphragm switch is only there to stop the pump when it’s done pumping to prevent it from running dry. It’s NOT there so you can leave the pump plugged in all winter.

If a shaft seal type pump like this one is run dry for an extended period. The seal will be destroyed and the lubricating oil will be lost into the water you’re pumping as the original poster described. A great way for this to happen is for the water level to rise and freeze the diaphragm switch leaving the pump in the on position pumping nothing which would cause instant pump death.

A quote from the manual which these reviewers obviously didn’t read:

“Remove the pump when conditions will cause water to freeze.
Freezing water may result in rupture to the pump and/or switch
enclosure, and could result in possible electrical short.”

This goes for ANY pump of ANY design from ANY maker.

If you want to buy a pump you can run dry buy a magnetic driven one and please remember to remove it and keep it from freezing.

User Review:

This is the third one of these Little Giant pool cover pumps I have owned. They work great, including this new one. In non-freezing conditions it always switches on when the water level rises, always switches off to protect itself from overheating when the water level has been pumped down, and never clogs up. My praise of this product comes with one caveat: do not leave it outside to run in freezing weather.

My track record of keeping my Little Giant pool cover pumps working for the long term is not so good. I had been following what I now believe to have been some bad advice: that it is OK to leave it out on the pool cover all winter. After two dead pumps in five years, much online research, and consulting with a senior technician at the company that services my pool cover, I have come to the conclusion that the Little Giant pumps are not going to last a long time if you leave them out in the brutal Michigan cold. Just don’t do it. I will have to find another way to get the melting snow and ice off of my pool cover.

I continue to believe strongly in this pump as being reliable. But, do not abuse the machine and expect it to miraculously keep running for many years. I suspect that many of the negative reviews of this model are the result of people following the same bad advice I followed for so long. I will not be leaving this new one out in the cold to meet the same grim fate as its predecessors.
