Passive Solar Cooling with Awnings

Passive solar cooling with awnings

Did you know that awnings can help keep the inside of your home cool, as well as providing a shady place to rest or entertain outdoors?

Used as a passive solar cooling technique, awnings minimize the radiant heat entering your home through windows, which will reduce energy use.  You can turn down the fans and reduce A/C usage simply by installing an awning.

You’ll want to position awnings appropriately as against the angle and trajectory of the sun relative to your home.  Keeping intense afternoon sun from your windows is the best way to use passive solar cooling with awnings.

  • That’s a great point that many people don’t often realize. I’ve always been more aware of the cooling effects while outdoors under my patio shade, not so much indoors. So it’s easy to see why the indoor benefits are often overlooked. Mostly it shows up in the air conditioning bills since we try to keep our houses’ temperatures consistent. Just less work for the a/c this way!
