Salmonella eggs recall can harm the consumer. The recall expansion announced Wednesday involves eggs from Wright County Egg packaged under the brand names Albertsons, Farm Fresh, James Farms, Glenview, Mountain Dairy, Ralphs, Boomsma’s, Lund, Kemps and Pacific Coast. The egg cartons are stamped with Julian dates 136 to 229 (May 16 to Aug. 17) and plant Nos. 1720 or 1942. The affected eggs were distributed to wholesale supermarkets and retailers in California and Nevada.

With 380 million eggs under recall, consumers may be anxious about eating any egg or food product containing eggs. The eggs potentially contaminated with salmonella have been distributed under the brand name Olympia Valley, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation said today in a press release. Wright County Egg based in Galt, Iowa, announced a voluntary recall of shell eggs distributed under a variety of brand names because of possible salmonella contamination.

Las Vegas-area health officials don’t know the exact source, but are reporting an increase in cases of salmonella bacteria infection usually associated with eggs and poultry. A Homer person has tested positive for a strain of salmonella associated with a national recall of eggs distributed in Alaska. Investigators have not yet interviewed the person to find out where he or she purchased the eggs.

As you know, Salmonella is an organism that can be passed from person to person. It can sometimes cause fatal infections in young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, the DEC said. Healthy people who get salmonella can have fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Southern Nevada Health District spokeswoman Stephanie Bethel said Wednesday there have been 30 cases of Salmonella enteritidis in southern Nevada since January. That’s four times the usual number. Officials from Wright County Egg released a statement saying that Salmonella enteritidis cases related to the affected shell eggs have been confirmed, and investigations into the source are underway.

Consumers who believe they have bought one of these cartons are advised to return them to the store where they were purchase for a refund. They are also advice not to eat the Salmonella eggs recall. This is for shelled eggs only, and not other egg products available from Wright County Eggs. However, the elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems may be the most susceptible to becoming seriously ill as a result of salmonellosis. In these patients, the infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream, and then to other parts of the body.
