When we feel sick, we rely mostly on medications to help us get better. Prescriptions and medicines can really do well for us and improve our health condition but that can only happen if we use them appropriately. Medicines can also potentially harm us if we do not use them safely.
One thing to remember in taking medications is that it should be appropriate for our condition. Suppose we have colds, we can buy OTC drugs from pharmacies or we can also ask the pharmacist to help us buy the right medicine to treat the colds. Reading and understanding the label of drugs is also important in using medications safely.
The contents of the label will tell us what the medicine is for, how to use and when not to use it. We can also ask the pharmacist when we are purchasing these medications from the pharmacy about the drug’s side effects if the wordings on the label seem too complicated. The pharmacists can advise us if the medication we are buying will counteract with the medicine we are already taking.
Some medicines require that we should first eat before taking it. We cannot just take the medicine with an empty stomach because instead of helping us feel better, it might only cause more damage to our health. The correct dosage and the right time interval between medicine intakes are also other important things to consider when taking medicines. Medications for children are usually based on the body weight while some dosage for some drugs is based on the child’s age. It is dangerous to take too much amount in one taking because overdosing can potentially cost you your life.
Of course there’s also the proper storage of the medicines and pharmaceutical supplies to ensure the medicine is not contaminated and safe before use. Labels usually tell us of directions on how to store and keep the medications and we need to follow it. We cannot just put the medicine bottle or container anywhere as it may have a chemical reaction with the ambient temperature and change the effectiveness of the medicine. You also need to check the expiration date of the medicine to make sure that it is still safe to take.
