great little netbook for the price, October 11, 2010
By Missle3944
right now i am typing the review on the netbook. it is a great laptop. the wireless n is very fast and it is very quiet. Although i was trying to network it to a vista computer and a xp home edition desktop. i could emertintantly see then vista on the netbook but I could not see the xp at any time. the keyboard is pretty comfortable although i do make alot more typing errors than usual but ill just get used to it. This is a great netbook for multitasking. i just uploaded a video to youtube while on facebook and yahoo and it worked very smooth. windows 7 starter is very nice. i hope you get this netbook because it is a great buyGood, but not that great, still kind of slow. Excellent battery life., October 9, 2010

I purchased this netbook about 3 weeks ago. So far, it has been running good for simple tasks such as browsing websites. However, for instance, if you multitask by having multiple website tabs open, running word processor program, it will drain the memory given that it is only 1GB. When the memory becomes full, the computer suddenly becomes slow.I immediately upgraded the memory to 2GB, it’s a little bit faster and the computer does not run out of memory anymore. But, the problem now is with the processor. With antivirus running in the background, sometimes it takes 100% of CPU power when it is performing virus scan on the computer, then all tasks become slow, but still acceptable for a netbook. On the good side, the Atom processor is excellent in battery life. Usually the battery lasts in average about 6 hours depends on your activities. I’ve tested the battery life under 100% CPU load at all times, it lasted about 4 hours, not bad.
Unfortunately, this netbook is not suitable for multimedia. For instance, YouTube videos (HD quality, 720i and 1080i) will NOT play smoothly in full screen because the CPU cannot handle such large video playback (CPU runs at 100% when playing HD video on YouTube).
The keyboard is okay, not so great because it is slightly smaller than regular keyboard, so it takes some time to getting used to it. The touchpad is great and responsive. The hard drive is more than enough for a small netbook (160 GB).
Conclusively, it is a good computer if you want to do simple tasks with limited multitasking abilities. My advice is that if you want to multitask, upgrade the RAM to 2GB, so that it will have more memory to run multiple things at the same time. Other than that, the processor is a drawback, although it is excellent in battery life, it is still kind of slow sometimes.
Just what I wanted, October 9, 2010

I wanted a small computer I could slip in my handbag without all that weight. This computer is perfect. But, it also is an amazing little tool that works like my laptop. The keyboard is great, and the touch pad responds easily. I am happy with my purchase.Does everything I need it to do., October 6, 2010

This is a great little computer for keeping me connected around the house and on the road. It is no frills, so if you are looking for speed, graphics, comfort and storage then look somewhere else. If you are looking for a good quality, easy to use, portable, and inexpensive means to get on-line you have found it!This computer was not intended to be my main unit for storing and processing pictures, music and video, so I have not taxed the processing power too much. But it does what I need it to do. I typically use it to watch TV on-line around the house, connect to social media and check on-line e-mail. Set up was a snap. I added some free anti-virus software and everything has worked flawlessly so far.
The keyboard is not meant for typing a dissertation and is just as useful as I need it to be to type short posts and e-mails. I have good sized mitts so I have to concentrate on hitting the keys correctly to minimize corrections. The touchpad is effective and the gesture-scroll is very useful. The WiFi reception is good and I can go outside while maintaining a good connection from my Wireless-N router. The battery will easily allow me to stream video for 3 hours plus.
I’d love to see even more gesture commands available to make navigation even easier. An LED battery display would be nice as well.
My home PC is an Acer and I’ve been happy with the price and performance for 2 years. I would recommend Acer to anyone.
Works fine while it works – but after 3 weeks and light use, our screen cracked internally and ACER won’t fix, October 3, 2010
By Nathan Andersen
We purchased three of these for our family, and after 3 weeks one is down. The screen cracked internally, under normal use, and unless we decide to pay about half of what we paid for the machine in the first place, we are 1 down out of 3 and crossing our fingers that the other two don’t break. A few minutes of searching on the web shows that lots of other people have experienced the same thing with their Acer netbooks – the screen cracked when they hadn’t done anything to cause it and couldn’t understand why. The point of this note is not to worry existing owners who, so far, have been happy with their low-end but functional computers, but to help other potential buyers be aware that while this may work fine for you, it is cheaply made and may break under normal use, and if it does Acer will not cover it. Obviously, it’s like anything: sometimes you get lucky and can save money by buying a cheap brand that works for you. Sometimes, though, you are simply throwing money away, and it’s worth spending a bit more to have the assurance that a company is standing behind their products.I didn’t expect much in the way of performance with a netbook of this size and specs, but I’d heard good things and read good things here. After two weeks I was quite happy with the purchases: they generally have worked fine for what we wanted to do with them – homework and email and light web surfing for the kids. They load a bit slowly compared to my Mac Book Pro and my wife’s Macbook, but that’s to be expected. The keyboard is a bit awkward, and the touch pad is a bit less responsive than I’m used to, but again, that’s what I expected.
What I didn’t expect was that after 3 weeks the lcd screen on one of them would crack internally. That’s what happened, though. The computer was working fine one evening, and then when we turned it on the next morning there was a large black patch in the corner of the screen, that looks like ink spilling from a crack. It only shows up when the computer is on. There’s no external damage. We never dropped the netbook. No one stepped on it. It wasn’t abused. It just broke, with normal use. What’s ironic is that this one was probably used the least of the three, since the one who had it didn’t like its keyboard or mouse very much and used my wife’s Macbook whenever it was available instead of this. Anyhow, after minimal use for a few weeks it broke. I thought it was unfortunate that it went so quickly but knew there was a warranty and assumed we’d be covered, since we didn’t do anything unusual to cause it to break. I called the retail outlet where we purchased it (unfortunately, we didn’t buy it from Amazon), and they said their policy was 15 days on electronics and after that we had to deal with the manufacturer directly. Still, I thought we should have no problem getting it replaced when it broke so quickly and there was no external damage to the unit that would suggest misuse. It turns out I was wrong.
I called Acer, and after speaking to three levels of management, I got the same answer: that the warranty on the computer covers only hardware failure but does not cover damage, and a cracked screen, even an internally cracked screen, counts as damage. It doesn’t matter whether we didn’t abuse or misuse the computer. They insisted that because the problem didn’t show up when we first bought it, it must have been our fault. They asked if we’d dropped the computer or otherwise done something to cause this damage and when I insisted that we didn’t the managers (two different ones) said that possibly it happened by opening or closing the screen or that maybe we set a book on top of the notebook and that may have put undue pressure. We did, of course, open and close the lid during normal use, but not roughly, and we didn’t put any heavy books on it. As far as I’m concerned, though, if opening or closing the screen – even opening or closing it quickly – or putting a book on top of it could cause this kind of crack that means it is designed poorly. The manager accepted that I had reason to be frustrated but that their policy was that this kind of damage was not covered by warranty. After some discussion (not heated, because I don’t think it is ever very helpful to get angry with a spokesperson who is simply repeating company policy) – after some discussion, in order to appease me, she said that if I liked I could send it in and they would run a test to determine if the problem was due to us or due to the manufacturing. If it was a design flaw, they would fix it and send it back free of charge. When I pressed, however, she admitted that if the screen was cracked internally (and I can see that it is) they would charge me for it. If I had to do it again, I would have taken the money from the three netbooks and purchased one nice one (probably a Macbook) or two better ones (probably Samsungs) for my kids to share. I guess as they say: you get what you pay for. I’m reluctant, at this point, to pay more towards fixing a laptop I bought a month ago, when it’s clear that the company won’t stand behind their machines and can’t guarantee that they’ve been manufactured to reasonable standards of durability. I’m very disappointed and would not recommend going with this brand. Spend a little bit more for a Samsung, perhaps, or a bit more than that for a Macbook and you are much more likely to be satisfied long term.
