Waterproof a Camera

Waterproof a Camera

If you’re planning a beach vacation or snorkling in the Carribean, the last thing you want to happen is to ruin your expensive digital camera.  So how do you waterproof your camera?  You have several options.

If you’re really industrious, some MIT students have written up an article on how to build your own waterproof camera enclosure.  Seems like a fun project, but not a realistic option for most of us.  For the rest of us, you can either buy an enclosure for your current camera or purchase a new one that is designed to be waterproof.

The easiest and cheapest way is to find a waterproof enclosure for your existing camera.  Waterproof cases are specific to a camera model. Check the technical specs to verify that it’s going to fit your camera.  You should also check the rated depth on the enclosure.  You don’t want to take it diving if it only works to 10 feet underwater.  Amazon offers a number of enclosures for hundreds of camera models.  Click on the image to see if you can find one that meets your needs.

Secondly, you could purchase a camera specifically designed to be waterproof.  Like with the cases, cameras are rated to a specified depth.  If you just want something to take to the beach or in the pool, you’ll want a different camera than you would take diving.
