Paranormal Activity Movie Review

Paranormal Activity has been advertised as one of the scariest movies of all time. But is it really? Here’s what I think about the Paranormal Activity after watching it on DVD the other day.

Plot
It is a story about Katie (Katie Myers) and Micah (Micah Sloat), an unmarried couple, who moved into a house and subsequently experiencing stranger occurrences and paranormal activity, especially during the night. Micah started to film their bedroom at night while they were sleeping to find out what was bothering them. They discovered strange happenings but did not know what to do to drive the entity away. They called in a psychic (Mark Fredrichs) but he could not help them. So they were left to deal with the entity themselves.

1) Easy Plot and Storyline
I must say that plot is easy to understand. I can even sum it up in one sentence. The existence of the unseen and unknown has always intrigued many people in general, as such the simple plot was sufficient to build a movie such as this. But the storyline is just too boring. The scenes were mostly filmed either in the bedroom, the living room or the kitchen. There wasn’t any variety at all. After awhile I was getting restless.

2) Character Development
There is some development of the characters in the story. This actually helps the audience to feel for the two main characters in the movie. The movie showcase how scared both of them are at the presence of the entity, how Micah genuinely attempts to find out what’s happening with the film and ouija board, and how panic sets in for the both of them. Their thoughts and feelings were explored with regards to handling this mysterious entity.

3) Little Action and Scary Elements
I was miffed by the fact that there was really little action in the movie. It became a little predictable. There will be little happening in the day, but when night time arrives, there will be a little more action.

But I must say that the director made use of the simple and yet effective use of scary elements. For instance, dark lighting, mirrors and shadows. In addition, the presence of the entity is brought forth with Katie standing beside the bed for hours in the night, Katie being pulled out of bed and dragged into another room, and other effects. But each of these happen one at a time over several nights, testing my patience.

4) Blair Witch Project
For those who have watched this movie would understand how the cinematography works. The camera is held by one of the characters himself. As such, the wobbly scenes are expected throughout the entire movie, just like The Blair Witch Project. For some of us, this may cause a headache.

5) Lousy Ending
Okay, I’m not going to spoil your movie viewing. But the ending is really disappointing. After such a draggy storyline, the ending was abrupt and with little action. But I guess it was due to the fact that the directors is anticipating a Paranormal Activity 2 in the future. You can refer to this article to read about the ending to movie. Spoiler alert!

All in all, I must say that I feel that I have wasted time watching the movie. It wasn’t as scary as it was dubbed to be. I had expected much more. Paranormal Activity was actually quite disappointing!
