Reason of Weight Loss During Pregnancy

During pregnancy Weight Loss is common  the first trimester, when the mother suffers from morning sickness. However, when the weight loss persists even after the first trimester, it can be a cause of concern. Generally, a mother who has a BMI of less than 18.5 is considered underweight, a mother who has a BMI that ranges anywhere from 18.5 to 24.9 is considered to be of  normal weight and a pregnant mother who has a BMI of 25-29.9 is considered obese. When the weight of the mother increases consistently, you can be assured that both the mother and the baby are healthy. But when the mother looses weight, it could mean that the baby is gaining weight at the expense of the mother. This could be difficult for the baby as well.
Reasons for this could vary from alcohol usage to depression, drug abuse, eating disorders and even Crohn’s disease. Even when almost every health care professional shout their lungs out asking pregnant mothers to avoid alcohol and drugs, there are still some who don’t pay attention to their advice and end up putting theirs( and the baby’s) health at risk. Crohn’s is the digestive system of the body and can be a reason for weight loss. Depression is another factor that can significantly contribute towards weight loss during pregnancy.
Weight loss during pregnancy, could also blamed on the new trend that equals weight loss to a good health. While this may be not of major concern under normal circumstances, this can be a cause of major worry, when you are a pregnant. A pregnant mother has the responsibility has to eat for two people. But this does not mean that she has to load herself with food or eat twice as much. What matters is what you eat and not how much you eat. Filling yourself with junk food, that’s high on sugar, can have a negative effect on you and your baby. You could maintain a consistent and healthy weight gain by adding about 200-300 calories a day to your current diet. The trick here is to gain weight by eating healthy rather than filling yourself with junk.
As earlier discussed, Nausea and vomiting are probable causes of weight loss during pregnancy. When a mother looses weight inspite of an adequate intake of nutritious diet, it could be because the fat is metabolized, which could liberate ketones in her blood. These may sometimes be toxic to developing brains. So if you are someone who is experiencing morning sickness and weight loss, check your ketones.
But before you press the panic button, and start worrying about gaining weight, keep in mind that weight gain, especially during pregnancy is not consistent for everyone. There are instances where the weight of pregnant mothers, has stabilized after a drop or instances where weight has dropped after a rapid again.
Weight gain is a mere outward indicator of the growth of the baby. An ultrasound that reveals the growth of the baby is a better indication of the baby’s health. If you are worried about losing weight, getting an ultra sound should help to put your mind at ease.
