Two Types of Weight Lifting Equipment

When beginning your weight lifting routine there are two types of equipment that you can look to.  There are free weights, which are light weights separate from machines and include things like dumbbells.  There are weight lifting machines which are more complex and more expensive.

Free weights are weight lifting equipment such as dumbbells, weight bars, benches, exercise balls, and chin up and pull up bars.  They are tools that can be used independent of each other and are found in various sizes and weights.

The other type of weight lifting equipment is classified as weight lifting machines. These are more complex than free weights and are often found in gyms and often use a personal trainer as a second person working with the machine while you go through exercise regime.  Some of the terms that you hear in association with weight lifting machines are leg press, leg extension, calf machine, adduction and abduction machines, pull down machines and machines with cables and pulleys.  They are designed for a full body workout with the help of the machines working specific muscles groups.

Along with both kinds of equipment you will also find a variety of accessories to assist with your workout.  These include gloves, vests, belts, straps and special shoes.  They are all designed to protect and support your weight lifting efforts.
