Do you have an egg drop contest at your school? We were challenged to design a way to drop an egg from a fire truck ladder without the egg being crushed when it landed on the ground. We searched the internet for the best design to meet this challenge.
Our research found an article that outlined how to drop an egg without breaking it. This design only uses a small amount of bubble wrap, two cardboard boxes, some tape, and lots of newspaper. You will need to wrap the egg with the bubble wrap and deposit it gently inside a small box. Then line a larger box with newspaper, insert the smaller box containing the egg, and stuff newspapers around the smaller box. The final act of preparation is to tape the larger (outer) box shut and write your name on the box.
The fun part is the testing. Start with a small test by dropping your box five (5) feet and see if the egg breaks. If successful, rewrap your package and try the test out a second floor window, which will be approximately about a fifteen (15) foot drop. If successful, you are ready for the challenge of dropping your box off a seventy (70) foot ladder truck with sirens blazing.
This is a great family project and shows children the value of cushioning a fall.
