One thing is very obvious when watching “The Greatest Show on Earth”, Cecil B. DeMille absolutely adored the circus, from the amazing acts, the wild animals, the comedy of the clowns as well as the way the big top would move from town to town like a well oiled machine. But sadly “The Greatest Show on Earth” is not the great movie that it could have been as it ends up two movies in one. It is DeMille’s loving ode to the big top as he gives us a documentary style look out how the circus works and then there is a made up story, one of manufactured drama to give the movie a more traditional cinematic angle. The two don’t blend and end up causing “The Greatest Show on Earth” to be both fascinating and entertaining but rather long as switches between documentary and drama …..
