Several years ago, few people were accessing movies via the internet. There were a variety of services that provided movie downloads, but this ate up a great deal of time and bandwidth. In addition, some of the downloads were illegal, leaving the average consumer confused. To make matters worse, enjoying those movies was pretty much restricted to your computer.
In the past few years however, things have evolved and now streaming movies from the internet directly to your television is much more common. There are a variety of reputable movie streaming services. Now, the question for many consumers is how to pick a good movie streaming service.
Probably the first thing to realize is that consumers don’t really have to chose a single service. They can probably use a variety of services to assure they get access to all of the movies they want.
When deciding whether a service will be of use, it’s of course important to look at what they have to offer. Some services have a more extensive library of titles than others. However, you’ll also want to consider the types of movies you want to enjoy. Some services will have more indie films, others will offer more recent blockbusters. If you’re interested in foreign films or classic black and white movies, you’ll have to be picky about the services you use.
Another thing to consider is how the movies will be streamed to your television. There are internet connected TVs that offer the apps you will need to stream those movies. But, the TV will need the app that coincides with the service you want to use. If you want to stream Netflix movies to your TV, then having an app for only CinemaNow won’t be of use.
Apps for streaming movie services are also available on a variety of set top boxes, BluRay players, gaming systems, and so forth. Again, the apps just need to match up with service or services you want to use.
Certainly determining what equipment you will need will also influence the associated costs. However, beyond the upfront cost for the appropriate television, set top box, or other device, you’ll also need to consider the charge for the movies themselves.
Some services, like Netflix, will charge a monthly subscription. However, they don’t charge a fee per title. Other services have a per title fee, but no subscription fee. You just need to estimate your usage and compare the total costs.
In any event, you probably wouldn’t want to commit to a service long term through a contract. Netflix doesn’t require any committment, but it’s worth the time to check when signing up for any monthly subscription service.
As a consumer who loves movies, you’ll also want to be aware of any limits. It’s unlikely a service that charges a per title fee will place a limit on the number of movies viewed in a month, but some subscription services will. You just need to know your limits and determine whether or not they will fit with your usage. Of course, knowing about any limitations as far as your internet service provider will also be important.
