You can play as nineteen unique characters in Mario Sports Mix Wii. Each player belongs to one of five groups. Those groups are All-rounder, Speedy, Tricky, Powerful and Technical.

The All-rounder players are Mario, Yoshi, Luigi and any Mii character. The Technical group consists of Peach, Waluigi and Daisy. The Powerful group has Bowser, Wario and Donkey Kong. The Speedy characters are Bowser Jr., Toad and Diddy Kong.

A few unlockable players are hidden in the game. These characters don’t come from the the Super Mario video games. Five of them are from the Final Fantasy games and one from the Dragon Quest series. The White Mage is a Technical player. Ninja is an All-rounder. Moogle, the Black Mage, Cactuar and Slime belong in the Tricky category.
