Almost half of British motorists would like to see winter tyres made mandatory in the UK, according to a new poll.
The survey, carried out by car supermarket Motorpoint, claims that 46% of drivers supported the introduction of legislation which would make fitting winter tyres (also referred to as snow tyres) compulsory.
Over 1,400 people took part in the poll on the company’s website and almost half were in favour of the UK following in the footsteps of other European countries, including Austria and Germany, which have already introduced laws that force drivers to fit winter tyres in certain conditions.
David Shelton, Managing Director of Motorpoint, said: “While Government legislation may be a step too far at present, given the shocking state of our roads during the recent bad weather, winter tyres could be a sound investment for many people in the future.”
etyres, the UK’s leading online mobile tyre fitting company, saw a surge in orders for winter tyres following the recent bout of bad weather when Arctic conditions caused hazardous road condtions.
Research and tests prove that winter tyres boost performance on snow and ice thanks to a higher proportion of natural rubber and silica.
