A heightened level of aggressiveness can be considered mental illness, but a forensic neuropsychologist is able to differentiate between premeditated actions and actions that are the result of a chemical brain disorder that cannot be controlled.

Identifying and assessing criminal behavior are important functions, but treatment planning is an essential aspect in psychological care and the rehabilitation process. Forensic psychologists use what they have learned from individual assessments and apply that knowledge in the form of a treatment plan. Treatment can include medication as well as psychotherapy.
