Uji is located on the southern edge of Kyoto and is the second largest city in Kyoto Prefecture. The city is a popular stop for tourists both foreign and domestic.
Many visit Uji to see its historical sites, mostly its large number of historic shrines and temples located at its center. One such site is the Byodo-in, a temple housing the Amida Hall, also known as the Phoenix Hall, which is shown on the back side of the ten yen coin. The Amida Hall is one of the oldest wooden structures still standing and was built in 1053.
Uji is also famous throughout western Japan for its two major annual festivals. On August 10, the city hosts a large fireworks display that lasts for hours and on June 5 is the Agata Festival that funs late into the night. The Agata Festival has gained popularity due to the activities that are rumored to occur once the lights are put out at midnight.
Another major pull for Uji is that it houses the oldest tea shop in Japan. In the late fourteenth century the Shogunate sponsored the cultivation of green tea in Uji. To this day, Uji still produces some of the highest quality japanese green tea.
