Scoliosis is one medical condition in which a spine of the person is deformed and curved to the sides of the body in place of being straight. In short, scoliosis is an abnormal side curve of the spine. It is a very complex deformity. In x-rays, you can see the spine that forms an “S” or a “C”. No specific causes are present which produce this critical condition. Treatment of scoliosis involves careful observation, braces and surgery; though they do not always compulsory lead to a healthy and active life.

The spine is nearly straight at the time of birth. As the body of growth occurs, front to back curves develop. Often, scoliosis develops as the growth takes place. Spine scoliosis is uncommon bone deformation in which spine bends sideways that takes place mostly through teenage years. Some medical conditions for example muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy are responsible for scoliosis. But, the main causes are unidentified in most cases of scoliosis of the spine.

Scoliosis can be:

Congenital (means that it’s caused by birth)

Idiopathic (means that it’s caused from an unknown reason)

Neuromuscular (developed from previous condition such as spinal bifida, physical trauma, muscular atrophy, etc.)

Symptoms of the Spine Scoliosis:

Scoliosis has several symptoms unlike other diseases. Due to these symptoms, scoliosis is very easy to diagnose. Scoliosis has very distinctive symptoms as it is a bone deformation in the spine. In the coordination and the movement of the human body, the spine plays an important role.

Following noticeable deformations are seen in people who have scoliosis:

Uneven waist

Uneven hips

Uneven ribs

Uneven shoulder (one shoulder seems higher than the other)

The head is not properly center over the body

Uneven shoulder blades

Scoliosis does not induce pain in children or youngsters in most cases. If pain sensation occurs, then it may be due to another problem like a bone tumor. In some cases, the spine is the highly tilted and so the pain is produced due to scoliosis. In adults who have mild scoliosis, they rarely experience back pain that is directly related with scoliosis. The person can be disabled and may have difficulty in breathing when a patient has severe scoliosis. Working efficiency of lung can be reduced due to severe scoliosis of the spine which can decrease the volume of space available in the chest.
