Feline Diabetes Mellitus – Symptoms & Treatment for Diabetes Mellitus (DM)

Symptoms can include thirst, frequent urination, increased appetite but weight loss, sudden cataract, poor coat condition, lethargy etc. If your cat has any or all of the above symptoms take him immediately to a vet as soon as possible. Remember that having any or all of the above symptoms does not mean that your cat has Diabetes. It is only the vet who can decide on this through a series of tests. Tests include checking the sugar levels in the blood and urine. Normal sugar levels for any cat will be 80-120 mg/dl.
Treatment of diabetes in cats is not very different from treatment of diabetes in humans. Diet plays a major role in the treatment of diabetes since obesity is a major reason for Diabetes. Leave it to your vet to plan an appropriate diet for your cat. There are some cats which respond to a high fiber, low carbohydrate diet while some do not. The feeding routine is also important. Most cats feed themselves when they wish to. The food is just left there until they feel like eating. This may not be the case for a diabetic cat. Oral medications and insulin are the best way to cure diabetes.
Remember that Diabetes is curable but can be life threatening if untreated. A proper schedule for diet and insulin is essential. If there are multiple care takers it is important that there is a chart that is maintained so that there is no confusion as who gave the medications and when. Always keep a note when medications are given. Also follow the vet‘s advice thoroughly on giving the medications. Never use the same syringe if your cat is on insulin. This will prevent infections and other complications. If your cat is being treated and monitored at home then remember never to inject at the same spot as this may scar the skin and the insulin will not be properly absorbed in the body.
This should not hamper with your cats lifestyle .Your feline can go out and enjoy the world. Remember that this is not the end of the world for your cat.
