“My computer keeps freezing and is slow.” I cannot count how many times I have heard that. There are so many things that make your computer running slow, and there are just as many slow computer solutions to match them. Some programs cost money, some do not work, and some deceive you. Would not the most universal tip be the one that is free, nothing to install, and takes 15 seconds to do? The following tip is not a cure-all, but it is effective nonetheless, and you have nothing to lose!
*While similar features exist on other operating systems, the following directions are intended to be with the use of Windows 7. Alternate directions might be required for other setups.
Disable Unneeded Fluff
If you brought a pre-built computer, chances are that it came with a bunch of unneeded software and options that you will most likely never use. Well, Windows does the same thing with appearance settings. By default, it decides to make your OS look as cool as possible. Sleek looks do not equal sleek speeds. While this tip will not make your computer run lightning fast, it will take out a small factor of why you have a computer running slow.
1. Find the search bar by clicking the Windows Button at the bottom of the screen. Type in that search bar “appearance” and hit Enter.
2. Choose the option at the top of the list, and it will bring you to a window relating to appearance settings and performance options.
3. Select “adjust for best performance” by clicking the bubble beside it, and then click OK. You now have a slightly faster, albeit more boring, Windows System.
The appearance settings, and slight performance, will be the only things changed in this scenario. Things will appear drastically different, but they are in fact all just superficial. If you prefer the prettier Windows to come back, just follow the same directions as before to revert it back. If you are unaware of what these changes will do, let me give you a few examples. The start menu will start to look like the older versions of Windows where it actually labeled the start button. Everything will be blockier and more minimalistic. Nothing will be added more than just the bare essentials. Some prefer this style, speed increase aside, just because it is easier to sift through when everything is simple. The performance effects are minimal, so if you cannot stand the new look, just change it back the same way you changed it the first time.
Small slow computer solutions such as the above mentioned will not cure all computer problems. If you continually say, “My Computer Keeps Freezing,” this will help a tiny bit, but you might want to try other outlets if you have serious problems.
