2020 is Almost Here. Is Your RCRA-regulated Facility Meeting the EPA’s Vision?

In 2002, the EPA published a report titled “Beyond RCRA: Waste and Materials Management in the Year 2020.” The report was the product of research conducted by a state and EPA workgroup, and it outlined a roadmap for society to move toward a more sustainable method of resource management. It also gave specific goals for cleaning up contamination at Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regulated facilities.

The findings outlined in the report have helped build a framework for government and the private sector in their waste management practices. The main goals of the 2020 Vision are:

  1. Reduce waste and increase the efficient and sustainable use of resources
  2. Prevent exposures to humans and ecosystems from the use of hazardous chemicals
  3. Manage wastes and clean up chemical releases in a safe, environmentally sound manner

The EPA’s Message to RCRA-Regulated Facilities: Accept Full Accountability

A host of recommendations and task groups have been assembled to help guide RCRA-regulated facilities cleanup their sites and put prevention measures in place in order to meet the 2020 Vision. A recent presentation released by Maria Parisi Vickers, the Deputy Director of the EPA, outlined specific recommendations for RCRA-governed facilities, including the following:

A new way of doing business: Both the EPA and states can develop business models that are focused on achieving environmental results at their facilities by the year 2020. Businesses will need to accept full accountability and responsibility for all of their facilities.

Performance-based bids: Encourage industry by offering performance-based bids. Consultants who work with industry can help spur progress toward the 2020 Vision by offering bids that demonstrate clean, environmentally responsible plans.

Local government participation: Local governments can involve the public in cleanups to encourage communities and neighborhoods to take part in the planning for sustainable waste and materials management.

Explore innovative ideas to help meet the 2020 Vision: Use third-party professionals to help oversee the clean-up process, and enroll RCRA facilities in streamlined state-response programs.

How Far Along is Your RCRA-Regulated Facility in Meeting EPA Expectations?

The message from the EPA is loud and clear for industries regulated by RCRA: Accept full accountability and responsibility for your facilities. In doing so, many organizations are turning to help from outside waste management experts.  A professional environmental waste management company can audit your existing efforts and create a plan to drive your environmental initiatives forward while allowing you to focus on your core business.

When considering a third party waste management firm, look for one that will take complete ownership of all waste streams and manage them on your behalf.  Selecting an appropriate service partner will reduce your overhead, improve accountability and create a one-stop shop to facilitate your regulatory compliance and waste reduction goals.
