Facebook Depression a Cause for Concern Amongst Teenagers

As the social media website Facebook begins to continue its social media network climb to nirvana so an alarming new occurrence amongst teenagers seems to be growing. This concerns the increasing sense of alienation referred to as “Facebook Depression”. The continual importance of the metrics of status and friends on Facebook appears to be driving some teenagers to increasing desperate measures. A loss of self esteem connected with growing signs of depression have added to the worry of millions of parents. Coping with this new form of social media angst the modern teenager in society needs to re-establish a truer meaning of the essence of friendship.

The warning sign of this social depression makes many teens feel inferior to their contemporaries. This inferiority results from the boasting of Facebook status amongst the many schoolchildren using the site as a true social gathering point. Many teenagers are left with feelings of depression as they try to compete with the “ideal” of what success means.

However many people, scientists included, conclude that this depression exists anyway in teenagers and blaming social media seems to offer no sense. As teenagers grow up in an advanced technological age using the Internet as a means to socialise remains no different than socialising in a street setting. However as the American Academy of Paediatrics states recently “Facebook Depression” continues to grow amongst the teens. Looking out for the signs and symptoms of depression helps prevent any serious consequences occurring.
