Simple car repairs can be done at home if one knows how to make a diagnosis, what is needed to get the job done and how to test the job that has been done. Some simple repairs are replacing the brake bulb, head lamp, and changing disc pads.
Replacing Brake Lights
Check brake lights on the car regularly. Get someone to sit in the car and depress the brake while you stand at the rear of the car and watch for both left and right lights to come on. If there is no light, it means that both bulbs will have to be replaced; if one light, then one bulb replacement will be needed. Any good auto store can supply these bulbs. To do the replacement, use a screwdriver to unscrew the screws located on the outside of the shade plastic or inside the trunk. Remove the plastic covering and unscrew the worn bulb by pushing in and out as you go along. Then put the new bulb into the socket and screw in. Test by turning on the car and applying the brakes. Replace the plastic covering.
Replacing the Head Lamp Light
To replace the headlamp, first remove the plastic shield. Next unplug the 3 prong plug from the bulb. Remove the rubber seal then the spring clip that holds the bulb in place. Unscrew the old bulb and replace with the new one. Replace the spring clip followed by the rubber seal. Finally, reconnect the 3 prong plug to the bulb.
Disc Pad Change
Disc pads needs replacement when there is an unusual sound coming from the location of the wheels, the tires seem unusually tough as you drive along, and the brake makes a sound when it is depressed. This might seem like a job for a professional but it is something that you can actually do with the help of a jack and a ratchet and socket for removing the bolts holding the calipers.
Jack up the car. Remove the tire as the disc pad is located in the caliper which is in the area within. Use the ratchet and socket to unscrew one of the two screws on the caliper then lift it and dislodge the worn disc pad. Fit the new one into the empty space and replace and screw the caliper in place. Before driving, ensure that the brake is pumped if only one disc pad has been changed. This will ensure your safety.
These simple do it yourself car repairs can actually be done at home to ensure that your brake light, head lamp light and disc pad are in working condition.
