First released in 1987, the Dodge Shadow was by no means the typical Dodge muscle car. It was instead, an attempt by the company to compete with popular compact cars at the time. This effort was well received because of the numerous attractive features the cars had. One such feature was the engine that measured: 2.2, 2.5 or 3.0 liter depending on the model or body trim chosen. The five-speed manual transmission was an excellent choice by Dodge for the 2.2 liter Shadow engine. Even though the engine only gave a maximum output of 93 horsepower, it was still agile and could work under stress. These are the features that are desirable to the buyers of a used Shadow engine. While the 2.2 liter model of the Shadow engine may come with mixed reviews, its turbocharged version most certainly does not. The turbocharged version of this engine gives a massive output of 146 horsepower, almost matching up to that given by the 2.5 liter version and surpassing that given by the 3.0 liter V6 model. This is good, by any standard, and made the Shadow more competitive with other vehicles at that time.

For an engine that worked along with a five-speed manual transmission, the 2.5 liter engine was a bit weak – it gave just 100 horsepower when pushed to the limit. The turbocharged version on the other hand showed a great improvement over the standard 2.5 liter model and produced a surprising 150 horsepower output.

The 3.0 liter V6 engine provided just 142 horsepower output thus proving that newer and bigger are not always better. Dodge sought to rely solely on the V6 cylinders to give the engine the power it needed and while it did give the engine some power, it was not an improvement over the turbocharged 2.2 and 2.5 liter engines.
The shadow engines, if found in good condition, can power many mid-sized sedans made after 2000. These engines are powerful and, while they are gas guzzlers by today’s standards, they certainly fit the mold of powerful and speedy.
