There are so many great options for window styles on the market these days that often it just comes down to personal preference. Casement windows are certainly among the most popular styles though. This style of window opens outwards fully and is attached to the window frame using hinges. This was traditionally the most popular style of window in Britain and wasnt overtaken until the development of sash windows.
Windows which open fully but hinge at the bottom are called hoppers and those that hinge at the top are called awning windows. The term casement window only really refers to windows which hinge at the side. This style of window still remains very popular today as they open fully allowing plenty of air into a room. Not a bad feature in a fire either as you can climb out of a casement window in an emergency, as well as leaning out if you want a bit of air.
Double-hung windows will only open half way at the maximum. Sliding windows seem in principle like they would give a wider opening, but when you think about the pain of glass that must always stay in place it is still not fully open. It is not uncommon for windows to barely open at all though, in some new build properties you get no more than a tight crack.
So no doubt that you will get the best air flow from casement windows. It can be hard to catch a nice breeze with other windows, particularly when there are things obstructing the flow of air around your building such as trees and bushes. You can effectively funnel air into your building using the open window as a flap.
Dont assume that a casement window puts your home at risk in terms of security either, just because it opens wider. In fact, casement windows offer very strong security and are one of the hardest windows to break in to. You should have no problem finding an option that suits your home as there are so many different styles of casement window. Hinges on one side with a single panel opening outwards. Alternatively you might go for a double panel which opens in both directions and has hinges at both sides. They can even be combined with other styles that dont open (like fixed panel windows) to effectively give the best of both worlds.
If the size of your window opening is important, or if you are looking to add some needed ventilation to your home, then casement windows are an excellent choice. Lots of people would agree!
