Erecting curtain poles

Curtains are an integral part of any room – they are practical for keeping heat in the room whilst also disallowing light entrance in to the room. Curtain poles are an ideal way of placing curtains. They have more ornamental value than runners and can add vibrancy to the look of a room. Before they can be erected though, there are a few things that need to be considered and some equipment that needs to be gathered.

Before any further steps are undertaken, the first thing that should be done is to measure the window where the pole and the curtain are scheduled to go. Take note of this measurement but do not simply purchase a pole which is the same length as this; there needs to some lee-way so an extra 5 inches should be added on to the measurement took from the window’s length. This means that, if the window was 30 inches across then a pole of 35 inches should be purchased. As well as this curtain pole the following objects are needed – screws, a drill, brackets, a tape measure, a pencil, a screwdriver.

After these have been purchased make sure that pole brackets are positioned parallel from each other about 2 inches from the edge of the window. Remember that the pole was bought to measure an extra five inches longer than the window – position it so as to have two and a half inches spare at either side in a symmetrical fashion. A third bracket can be added to the proceeding if, for example, the window is extra long or the curtain is extra heavy. These factors could potentially cause the pole to bend without a middle third bracket. Make sure the levelling is accurate. Also make sure the brackets are placed high enough up so that the curtains do not trail on the ground. The curtains also, of course, need to be long enough to cover the entire window length.

If, for whatever reason, the curtain pole is too long, it is possible to manually readjust this by sawing it to the appropriate length. With wooden poles this is easiest – simply use a pull saw. For materials such as metal a hacksaw may be far more appropriate.

Before the brackets are placed on the wall some markings have to be made to ensure they are erected in the correct position. This means getting the pencil mentioned previously in the article and making small marks that in locations that have been measured using the tape. Drill holes into these positions before placing the brackets over them and securing them in place with a drill or screwdriver. Now place the curtain pole over the brackets. Checks the screws to make certain they are in tightly and the pole should be ready for use.
