What Prague Offers as a Holiday Destination

Nearly half a million passengers fly through Prague airport every year. Not really a surprise when you consider that the city is one of the best holiday destinations in the world when it comes to historic city breaks.

Prague is a beautiful city with a fantastic and well known history and all the beuaty of a fairy tale. Amongst the many architectural features the real treasure is the castle. The castle can be seen from the majority of the city’s many attractions, and it really towers over the old town. The castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The bulk of what you see today was built in the 1300s, however I discovered too that the site was of roman origins, and the evidence of this remained – all I had to do was dig for it.

Many people also flock to the Charles Bridge which crossed the Vltava River from the Old Town to the castle district. The bridge itself is a wonderful location and is lined with stunning statues that bring good fortune to those who touch them. How can you tell they’re lucky? You can actually see where the statues have been rubbed over the years! During the day you will see many artists and other traders selling their wares, but if you cross the bridge at night it can often be quite quiet. Many of us could appreciate a river cruise along the Vltava; a break from walking, a chance to rest our legs and a who new set of views to take in.

Many have heard of the clock within Prague that has captured our interests for many years and attracted an audience for just as long. The hourly chime marks the gathering of hundreds of tourists that fill the square to watch and admire the clock. The clock is the oldest example of an astronomical clock, still working, in the whole world, it is no wonder so many join the crowds to see it. Another handy tip is to get up early and walk to the town hall to see it in action before it gets busy. The legend goes that after completing his work the clockmaker was blinded so that he could never make another piece of such beauty and skill. In fact this is now thought to be a myth, although you will quite often still be told it on the walking tours.

Prague does not have such a thing as a bad time to visit. The city may seem a little more popular and excited during the summer holidays, but to be honest Prague is a destination that remains popular all year round, so dont expect the old town to be empty if you visit in the winter. The city can actually become more busy during the Christmas holidays due to the great Christmas markets.

I found it quite easy to believe that Prague had a very fairy tale like history, it made it easy to forget that it was a real, living, breathing city with a history just as true. If you want to see the other side of the more recent history of Prague think about visiting the Communism Museum.
