Recent Improvements in Bus Safety

Safety on buses, whether they be school buses, charter buses or city transportation has been a long disputed topic. The main issues arise from the lack of safety features for the passengers, namely seat belts. But in recent years, bus travel has gotten safer in more ways than one. Let’s see how far we have come from the early days of bus travel to what it has become today.

Seat Belts & Safety Harnesses

While this isn’t the most important item contributing to safer busing, it is certainly the most hotly contested and tangible. Simple physics leads us to believe that seat belts are a crucial part of passenger safety, and they are. The seat belt keeps the individual attached to the moving “system” of the bus, when it slows down, the passenger doesn’t tumble forward because they are slowing down at the same rate as the bus.

Many of today’s charter buses are coming equipped with safety harnesses to improve the safety of passengers while on the bus. These renovations cost thousands of dollars to the bus companies, but the demand for them is so great, that charter buses are almost forced to make these upgrades in order to retain business. Needless to say, safety restraints have gone from a distant wish to an immediate reality.

Regular Maintenance

While this may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think safety on charter buses, keep in mind that regular maintenance goes a long way towards keeping the buses running safely and on time.

Engine maintenance and new tires probably go further towards keeping passengers safe than safety harnesses, and new regulations are cracking down on those who skimp on regular maintenance, keeping bus travelers safer than ever.

With stricter enforcement, harsher fines, and more requirements, today’s buses are safer and better maintained than ever before.

Bus Safety Starts With Driver Safety

When it comes down to it, the safety of bus passengers is in the hands of the bus driver.

Up until recently (the past 20-30 years or so), there were not very many requirements in terms of getting a bus license. Today, the tests to get a bus driver license are more stringent than ever, and combined with the increased requirements and restrictions on what a driver can and cannot do while driving is only making this type of travel safer. Stricter rules determining how long drivers can go without breaks, standards to minimize distractions and more are making it safer to be on a bus.

These days, traveling on a charter bus is safer than just about any other form of transportation, including air travel, train, and driving yourself. If you are looking for an inexpensive way to get around this holiday season, consider a ticket on a bus – you will be safe, comfortable and relaxed.
