Looking for a plumber?

Need a qualified and licensed plumber in Victoria? Read on!The State of Victoria has strict requirements for plumbers who carry out professional plumbing work.

In the state of Victoria, the Plumbing Industry Commission is the Victorian Government statutory body which regulates the plumbing industry in Victoria.

What is the Difference between Qualified and Licensed Plumbers?

According to the Plumbing Industry Commission of Victoria, all plumbers must be either:

1)      Licensed plumbers – plumbers that carry out professional plumbing work must be licensed in one or more of the eight categories of plumbing work as stated by the Plumbing Industry Commission of Victoria. These categories are – Water Supply, Gas fitting, Sanitary, Roofing (Storm water), Drainage, Mechanical Services, Fire Protection and Non- Agricultural Irrigation. Their license is a proof that they are qualified to carry out these specific types of work and anyone employing the help of these plumbers should always ask to see their license before commencing the job at hand. Licensed plumbers are also able to supervise other plumbers.

2)      Registered plumbers – the Plumbing Industry Commission offers this option to plumbers who are qualified to be licensed but who choose not to because they only want to carry out private work for their friends and families’ homes. These plumbers must register and apply for a Private Plumbing Work Licence (PPWL) and must have insurance before they can do any private jobs. Plumbers with a PPWL cannot supervise another plumber during any job and can only issue Compliance Certificates specific for the private jobs they are doing.

Plumbers in Victoria must be either licensed or registered, and they can also be both at a time. When hiring a plumber, always be sure to check for their licensed or registration.  There are legal requirements that need to be met by plumbers doing plumbing work, to find out about these and to find out more information about hiring a plumber visit the Plumbing Industry Commission of Victoria website.
