Well the winter nights are fair drawing in and those of us who were once active, out and about in glorious sunshine, may find ourselves looking at being cooped up for a long winter period. Lets be honest the thought of going out for a run in the dark gloomy nights does not appeal to many, although I am sure there will be a few who say they find it invigorating, etc etc. So I thought that we could look at alternative ways of getting that exercise in without having to brave the elements.
It may be salsa or tango that you enjoy but dancing is enjoyed by many people around the country as a social activity but also as a way to get some exercise. There are such a variety of dances that exist that there will be one for whatever your age and ability. So get involved in a little mambo and find out where there is dancing near you.
You don’t even have to leave your house to exercise. With more and more people owning home gyms working out in your front room is the norm for winter months but what if you do not have the equipment? Well it is simple you can use many household items to keep your self active.

And of course there is always home aerobics and step classes which you can get instructional videos about. So staying inside does not mean that the exercise has to stop, you just need to look at different ways of being able to work on your cardio, strength and flexibility.
Yoga is generally taught in classes but there is no reason that you can not participate at home. Once basic positions are learned there is a lot of room for learning and improving your knowledge. There are plenty of books on yoga but to get visual instruction of movement and positions YouTube has videos for all levels.
Yoga is a great way to work on flexibility, strength and general well being. With very little required in the way of equipment it may be the ideal way to keep your self active over the colder months.
It is important that we keep active over the winter months. It has been proven that small, regular amounts of exercise can help with many areas of health from mental well being to helping lower the chances of various types of cancer forming and even returning after treatment.
