It has been revealed today that the Elizabeth Taylor online auction has added some 500 items of her most famous
costume jewellery pieces, with proceeds predicted to be in excess of £31 million. Included in the total, are bids for a range of designer handbags and further designer items owned and adored by the star before she passed away at the age of 79 in March of this year.
Known for her role in films like ‘Cleopatra’, the famous Elizabeth Taylor is auctioning a high value, white, diamond necklace, estimated alone, to sell for £9,400. Alongside the necklace sits a 33.19 carat diamond ring suggested to bring well over £100,000. A further piece worth mentioning is that of a pear-shaped pearl, given by her husband, Richard burton, who was one of 7. The value of the pearl has yet to be disclosed. Granted, the pieces mentioned come with fantastic, intriguing and famous ties, but when it comes to cost, it does beg the question ‘how much is too much’?
Bidders will be made up from the massive fan base Elizabeth Taylor built up throughout her successful career, close friends, memorabilia collectors, further famous people and many more. Let’s just hope they have plenty of cash in their wallets because judging by the above figures, there will be no bargains to be had amongst the costume jewellery section!
In a swift contrast to this money making auction, a Joan Sutherland exhibition has been opened to the public in London’s Royal Opera House, where people can view original costumes, headdresses and jewellery (some rather eccentric), worn by the famous dame throughout productions shown at Convent Garden. Joan’s early days as an actress, in 1952, earned her £10 per week. Seven years later her fame began to grow rapidly and she certainly reaped the rewards which were reflected in her pay cheque.
