Salvage and what it can mean for you

I was on the way to my local football teams quarter final draw against our rivals across the river, I suppose it was a local derby. I was very excited about the game and the normal drink and curry that always follow. I had to pick up two of my mates on the way to the park and ride car park, just five miles from the city center. I collected them and we were well on our way.

Whilst traveling along a dual carriageway, a car cut across us, I hit him side on. He did not signal, and he turned left right into our path. I could not avoid him, nor could he get out of my way. Luckily no one was hurt, the both cars were a quite damaged, I thought mine did not look too bad at all, for the impact it had. The police came and took pictures, they breath tested us both and took statements. The police confirmed there and then I was not to blame.

We made the second half of the match, and had the curry but none of us was in the mood for drinking. To make things even worse, we lost four – two. I had a lot of ringing around to do on Monday morning, with the insurance company and work as I use my car to travel around to see my clients.

I contacted the insurance company who agreed to give me a courtesy car. They said the cost would be met by the other guy’s policy. I asked what would happen with my car? They informed me it was an uneconomical repair. I would have a cheque within fourteen working days. I asked where my car would be going? They said it would be salvaged. I had to ask for clarification of what that meant.

It occurs the car will be sold for salvage (in Danish, we call it Har du brug for Bjergning), I will get a cheque for the value of the car less the salvage. I said I wanted the car back. I own it so why not take it? They were a little taken a back at first but had no option but to agree. I was told of its location and how and when I could collect it.

I could either sell it for salvage myself or repair it. I will wait and see how severe the damage is. If I advertised it for salvage on ebay or in the auto trader, I could make a tidy sum. I liked the car and have owned it from new so I would like to fix it if I can.

I visited the salvage yard where the car was currently stored. I took a friend who is a mechanic and bodywork specialist. He confirmed the damage was a quick and relatively cheap repair. The car was back on the road within a fortnight or so. I purchase all the required parts from ebay. I also got a nice sum from the insurance company, enough to afford roadside assistance (or  Autohjælp i hele Europa as we call it in Denmark).
