I need a new kitchen but my budget is very tight to say the least. I intend to project manage the new kitchen build myself. This will save me some money. I can coordinate the various tradesmen that I will have to contract, as I do not have the skills or the tools to do each job. I need an electrician, plumber, tiller and of course the kitchen fitters. I have written a schedule of works to aid me in the project management role. Choosing the kitchens made a little harder due to the number of styles on offer. You find one you like then lose it and find one more. I have planned this work while my wife is away, on an all-girls holiday, so it is a surprise for her. I know the style she likes but I have to hope my choice is the right one.
I have decided on the style and color, now I have to locate a shop that has it in stock. This is easier said than done. Most kitchen outlets have a huge choice, but they order when they sell. My time constraints mean I have to find one that is in stock now. I have already ordered the bespoke worktops, as they will take the longest to make and deliver. The kitchen unit size is a standard fitting so no problem with them fitting the counter tops.
My first stage is the demolition; I have ordered a skip so I can throw the rubbish away. I will keep the skip for the duration of the work. A tidy building site is a safe building site as they say. Once the room is empty, I will have the plumber in to move all the pipes where the new appliances will be. Then the electrician will move the plug sockets and light switches. As soon as these two have finished the tiller will come and tile the entire floor area.
The kitchen fitters can come and work their magic, the fitting will take two days according to their schedule. I think it will be a little longer due to the fact of the size and number of the units. As I ordered bespoke work tops these will take half a day alone. It will be made easier for them as the plumbing and electrical work was done prior to their arrival.
Once the kitchen was fitted, it was time for the tiller to return. He is to tile the walls in between the base and wall units. He has two days to complete the work. The final stage is to have all the lights and appliances connected by the electrician and sign them off. This document is needed for the mortgage company and the planning department. I have also booked a gas fitter to service the combo boiler just in case it was knocked during the kitchen refurbishment. I will then have a current gas certificate for good measure.
