Don’t let immobility limit you in your own home

I’ve recently been taking more of an interest in stairlifts as I myself become a little older. My parents don’t actually use a stairlift as they are currently residing in a dedicated residential home which has been specifically designed with elevators and lifts and there are no stairs to climb within their personal space. Although this is a great idea and has really improved the quality of life of both of my parents, I have never been involved in the process of buying a stairlift and watching one get installed in someone’s home. Even though I imagine that it will be a swift and as convenient of a process as possible, I am still worrying about getting it done but the one thing that motivates me is the fact I don’t want to become a prisoner in my own home.

Although I am not immobile, I don’t want to wait until I ‘need’ a stairlift before I get one; the reason for this is twofold. Whilst I am still working I would feel a lot more comfortable paying for it as I have more control over the flow of my money and which would allow me avoid any financial difficulty. Secondly, I want to be able to enjoy the luxury of having a stairlift, while at the same time reduce the damage to my legs. I have read that the more stress you put onto your legs when you are in this position can actually do much more damage and maybe result in you becoming much more immobile than you should be; if given the opportunity to be able to ease away the stress then I would take it so I could enjoy my mobility at a later age.

I enjoy my home and have gone to the trouble of building an extension, which I absolutely love, and I would hate to not be able to enjoy it because it would be hard walking up the stairs. I would literally feel like a prisoner in my own home and I can imagine that I would often try to avoid going up by making excuses. Baring this is mind, I don’t think that I will be able to maintain the cleanliness or the style of the rooms upstairs and the extension that I once loved would become more of a burden than a luxury. In my personal opinion, all of this could be avoided if I started looking at stairlifts now!
