Osteoporosis is bone loss caused by low levels of estrogen. For this reason, it usually appears in women (especially those who have already entered menopause). Bisphosphonates are part of a group of medicines that are used to treat this condition, and Ibandronic acid is one of these.
Estrogens and corticosteroids
The loss of bone mass during menopause can cause fractures that not only are painful, but which also put the life of the woman at risk. It has been found that prolonged corticosteroid-basedtreatments, while having the goal of improving other unrelated health issues, can actually aggravate this problem.
Oral or intravenous
Ibandronic acid can be taken in capsules or by means of intravenous injection. Which method to use depends on various factors.
One factor is sticking with the treatment. This treatment can produce secondary intestinal effects. These effects often dissuade some women from continuing their treatment. As a result, some prefer injection.
Another factor is the extent of bone loss.If the tissue comprising the bone has deteriorated to the point where fractures are very likely, taking the medicine orally is preferred because the patient can benefit from the medicine to a fuller extent. When taken orally, between 40-50% of the active component in the medicine will latch onto the bone cells, an action that doesn’t happen when it is injected.
Comprehensive approach
It is common for the recommendations for the prevention of Osteoporosis (having to do with eating more calcium and vitamin D) are also made to treat this condition.
The best results, achieved utilizing Ibandronic acid, are in conjunction with programs that actually do including the above mentioned components- calcium and Vitamin D. Thus, accelerated bone loss is avoided andthe risks of suffering fractures in the legs, hips, of wrists, (the places most affected by Osteoporosis) are lowered.
Other measures
Staying active is a big part of the treatment of Osteoporosis. Resistance training and well-being exercises (focused on the mind, body, and spirit) will have a positive impact on bone density. Some examples are walking, swimming, or practicing Tai Chi.
