How to Stop Dizziness in the Car: You and Yours Kids

For many of us, travelling in a car with small kids for a long time could a complete nightmare; and we are not just talking about safety of your kids; but many children normally suffer from dizziness due to what they consider an unusual movement; this is sometimes accompanied with headaches, nausea and even vomit; these are just some of the very characteristic “cinetosis” or the dizziness that many children  feel while travelling on a car; however, this is less common for those over the age of six.

There are many things you can do to avoid these type of incidents; however, it is important to understand that this is a normal part of their development and if your son or daughter suffer from regular episodes of dizziness then you might want to consult with your paediatrician; as there are many medication available in pharmacies but it is their doctor who should prescribe the correct doses and appropriate medication according to age, weight and state of their health; it is also important to assess any underlying health issue that might be causing the dizziness effect.

If these is a common incidence then you might want to travel first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon as this is where your children normally sleep; this is particular important if you don’t want your children to take any medication. It is also important that you kids don’t eat too much or too little before getting into the car; it is convenient to provide food rich in carbohydrates like a cookie or a piece of bread; if possible try to avoid too much liquid.

The temperature in the car must be comfortable for them, around 21ºC to 24ºC is probably ideal. Do not ever smoke in a car with children in it and avoid strong perfumes as kids then to be susceptible to new smells.

Try to make frequent stops for your children to rest; every two hours or so; this will make them feel better and more comfortable; however, if the dizziness has already started try to give him or her a small piece of lemon, as the acid is perfect to combat nauseas; if this doesn’t work, some fresh water is probably your next ally.
