Do-It-Yourself Velux Window Installation

A Velux window is used to provide light and air to an otherwise dark and stuffy place. It is most commonly used in projects such as converting a loft into a bedroom. It is usually used in tandem with Velux blinds, which provide shade and protection during the times of day when the sunlight can be too harsh. Although putting in a window and Velux blinds into a roof is best done by a professional roofer, it can actually be done by the homeowner himself. However, there are some things that need to be considered before the actual installation.

The size and the position of the Velux blinds and windows are the first things that should be considered.  When these have been decided upon, it is then time to create an opening in the roof. To do this, the tiles or slates on the outside of the roof must be removed. And then, the rafters underneath must be cut. While the cutting is going on, there must be ample support from the beams to keep the roof from caving in. After the opening has been made, crossbeams have to be fitted alongside the regular beams to provide additional support.

The next thing to do is to take the exact measurements of the opening that has been made. This information is necessary when ordering the Velux blinds (or as we say in Poland Zaluzje VELUX) and windows. The measurements have to be as accurate as possible, to make sure that they will fit perfectly onto the opening.

At this point, the installation is ready to take place. There are the steps that should be done during the installation.

1. Fit the window into the opening. To do this, only the frame should be used. The glass must be removed for ease of handling, and also to avoid damaging it. Locate the hinges on the windows. The hinges have two small pins in them. When the pins are pushed in, the glass will be separated from the frames.

2. The windows come with brackets. These brackets must be attached to the corners of the frame using screws.

3. The entire frame is placed on top of the appropriate batons. This is then held into place with screws.

4. The frame should fit perfectly into the opening, and it should also appear flat and level with the roof. There is a black wedge located under one of the corners of the frame. It can be used to adjust the window so that it is completely level with the roof. A level window is not only neat and professional-looking, it is also more stable.

5. After the window has been placed, it is now time to install flashings. There are many available types of flashings. The most appropriate one for the project depends on the roof type. It is important that the flashings and roof type match and that the flashings are installed correctly, so that there will be no leaks. Flashings should be placed from the bottom upwards. The soakers must be fixed to the sides of the window and onto the roof. Serrated top edges keep them from slipping. These soakers are attached to each other through fold-over tabs.

6. The tiles or slates are replaced after the flashings have been put into position.

7. Finally, the glass is reattached by passing it upside down through the window and matching the hinges to the appropriate openings.
