Female Genital Mutilation is a cultural procedure that has been carried out since ancient times throughout the world, mainly in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. It consists of girls and young women having parts of their vagina either partially or completely cut off by blunt, unsterilized blades and other unsanitary instruments. Female genital mutilation affects 5 girls every minute worldwide. The Word Health Organization estimates that annually 2 million girls undergo the procedure globally.
