Get an empty paper towel cardboard, slit about an inch of the cardboard tip with a scissor. Slip the end of the Christmas light string into the slit of the cardboard tube. Wind them carefully in even rows along the length of the cardboard to avoid tangles. Put the ends of the string first, winding it as it nears the plug end. This will make installing them the following year easier by plugging the lights string and unrolling from there. If there are two or more wrap them individually with some paper towels, this will serve as cushion for the lights in case they get moved around while in storage. Solar lights can be protected with sheets of stiff cardboard to protect the sensitive panels.
